Cutting Corners: Save on Your Electric Bill

MIAMI (CBS4) ― Although the summer officially ended today, the sun will keep on heating south Florida homes for months and leave people cranking the air conditioning and cranking out extra cash. But a familiar method can do more than just keep you cool during this time of the year.

Workers are giving one south Florida woman the shade she needs to keep cool in her home.

"Since I have done the windows it has cooled down a lot," said Lynn Maupin, who lives in South West Miami Dade.

Home window tinting is providing Maupin with more savings than ever. "It's just like your car. You can tell the difference in your car. It's the same in your home," said Maupin.

With tints people can feel the difference right away, but people will also see the difference in their electric bills. Robert Flores, owner of Solar Tint Incorporated, claimed tinting windows can save families hundreds of dollars a year.

"The air conditioning comes in less, so it works less and you get a savings," said Robert Flores. Another good aspect to tinting windows is the fact that people can get more savings because the tints keep out the dangerous ultra violet rays.

"It prevents drapes, carpets, and flooring from fading," said Flores. Having your windows tinted can also get you a tax credit of 30 percent of the total cost to have your windows and doors tinted. And doing it in the off season is another way to cut corners. "In the winter, I think we cut more breaks cause we have less calls," said Flores to CBS4's Jorge Estevez.

For comparisons on tinting, CBS4 found Angie's List, an on line service that provides consumer reviews to make sure people get the most for their money.

"Angie's list has really come about as a magnifier to the word of mouth experience," said Angie Hicks, Founder of Angieslist.com.

And as far as homeowners are concerned, they can be made in the shade. "Yes. I am excited. Now it will be cooler," said Maupin.
