Workers Struggling To Find Careers In New Economy
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
Tens of thousands of people across South Florida remain out of work as the economic recovery slowly trickles down to Main Street. But, despite the sluggish economy, experts say there are jobs out there to be filled, it's just a question of figuring out what you need.
"The conversations and interviews are positive, but we're waiting to hear back from them, so I'm gonna go from there," said Barry Daivs. He's been unemployed since being laid off from his job of 14 years in the food and beverage industry.
Beverly Tauber has been pounding the pavement at a job fair in Fort Lauderdale on Thursday. "Hopefully, there is something out here for me," Tauber said. She might be in luck as more than 20 companies at the job fair are actively hiring.
Work Force One, the state of Florida's employment agency, is also beginning to place more clients as Florida enters the tourist season. In addition, the holiday season has arrived and that means even more jobs come open.
"We're seeing more employers coming into our centers to do recruiting on-site," said Kelly Allen of Work Force One. "Retail, hospitality, casinos, those type of industries."
Still, there are concerns that the jobs could just be seasonal. But, as consumers slowly begin to spend again, businesses will need new employees to deal with the increased demand. Just don't expect a massive turnaround in the job market just yet.
"I don't expect huge increases. Everything is like turning up a dial a little at the time, and that's where we are right now," said Nova Southeastern University economist Albert Williams.
