Jawan Strader is the evening co-anchor for CBS4 News 10 PM newscast on My33. He joined the CBS4 and My33 team in August of 2004 and was quickly, and literally, thrown into the center of the storm.
The anchor/reporter reported from the eye of Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne throughout his first month on the job, walking viewers in South Florida and across the country through the voracious storms as they pounded various parts of the state.
Jawan is an award-winning journalist, and brings more than ten years of broadcast experience to South Florida. He's been all over the country, working in Cleveland, Ohio, Washington, D.C., Austin, Texas, Oklahoma and South Bend, Indiana. He credits his mother as his inspiration. "She was my mother and father," he says. "Doing it all, so that her son could have a good education."
Being a voice for those who can't speak is important to Jawan when telling stories about the community. In addition to being a journalist, he's also a motivational speaker who regularly volunteers to talk at schools and other forums where the focus is on helping young people succeed.
A native of Indianapolis, Indiana, Jawan is happy to call South Florida home. He's also a big sports fan who can be seen at many Miami sporting events cheering on the Dolphins, Heat and Marlins. But the biggest loves in his life are his children and he relishes the time he spends with his family. Jawan also enjoys reading, playing basketball and weightlifting, and he's a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi, Fraternity, Inc.
He graduated with a degree in journalism and speech communication from Indiana University.
