Nelson Adams grew up on an uneven playing field in Miami's inner city, and went on to become one of America's premier physicians, thinkers. He currently presides over the centuries' old National Medical Association, an organization of African-American doctors in America.

Old Miami PD Black Precinct Re-opens As Museum

The City of Miami marked Black History Month Monday night with the dedication of an exhibit in a building that once housed the first black police precinct in the city, serving the mostly black residents of the once vibrant community of Overtown.

"Black Splash" Honors African-American Swimmers

Through the Jim Crow-era, African-Americans were excluded from America's institutions, beaches and pools. Few African-Americans participated in aquatic sports, but a documentary called "Black Splash" being shown at the International Swimming Hall of Fame in Fort Lauderdale, presents some of the truths of who were legendary swimmers in American history.

One-Time "Black" Beach Reopens To All

Historic Virginia Key Beach Park reopened Friday as a tribute to people who turned an archive of segregation into a vibrant public place for everyone. In 1945, after blacks protested about beach access, the county designated Virginia Key Beach as ``Colored Only.'' A ribbon-cutting ceremony today marked its opening with Rev. Dr. Joseph E. Lowery of the Coalition for the Peoples Agenda officially dedicating the beach.
