Queen Elizabeth2 Sails One Last Time Out Of SOFLA
QE 2 Departed Port Everglades For The Last Time Thursday
Ship Is Being Turned Into Floating Hotel In Dubai
PORT EVERGLADES (CBS4) ―
It's time to say "bon voyage" to the luxury ocean liner, Queen Elizabeth 2.
South Florida has been the ship's winter home since 1971. The ship departed Port Everglades Thursday around 5:00 p.m. for her final sailing. Landside well-wishers watched the QE2's departure from the SE 17th Causeway bridge.
The QE2 has travelled more than five and a half million nautical miles, including 25 circumnavigations of the globe, and more than 80 transatlantic crossings. 2.5 million passengers have sailed on the ship.
The ship is retiring from her 40-year sailing career after it was purchased by private equity firm, which has plans to turn it into a luxury floating hotel, retail, museum and entertainment destination at Palm Jumeirah, Dubai.
