Second Man Charged In Migrant Smuggling Case
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
Jean Monique Nelson is allegedly another piece to the puzzle in the case of a migrant smuggling boat that capsized off South Florida's coast last month, killing nine people.
Nelson is being charged with alien smuggling resulting in a death, which carries a potential death sentence. Authorities say Nelson helped organize the trip from the Bahamas and took turns driving the boat.
According to authorities, Nelson was identified by one of the 16 rescued migrants and by 33-year-old Jimmy Metellus, the other man charged in the case. Metellus has not yet entered a plea. He is charged with trying to smuggle more than 30 migrants into South Florida.
The boat carried mainly Haitians and capsized about 16 miles off the Palm Beach County coast. At least ten migrants disappeared in the water and are believed to have drowned. Nine survived.
