Diver's Body Pulled From Water Off Marathon
MARATHON (CBS4) ―
A day of fun and adventure under the water ended in tragedy for a spear fishing diver in Marathon.
Monroe County Sheriff's spokeswoman Deputy Becky Herrin said the man, who was from Wellington, had joined three friends on board a 23 foot Hydrosport for a morning of spear fishing in approximately 50 to 70 feet of water on the ocean side of Marathon. Herrin said they were not diving for lobster, but were fishing.
He and two others were in the water when one of the men became separated from the other two. The single diver surfaced and the operator of the boat pulled anchor to help him out of the water. The other two divers surfaced at a different location and were waiting to be picked up when one man noticed that his friend was floating face down on the surface. The survivor began waving for help.
The crew of the "Marathon Lady," a commercial boat, spotted the waving diver and came to help. The crew pulled both men aboard and immediately began performing CPR on the unconscious diver as they headed for shore.
The Marathon Lady was met at Captain Hook's Marina in Marathon by paramedics who pronounced the unconscious man dead. The sheriff's department, which has not yet released the man's name, said the cause of his death remains under investigation.
