New Program Will Restore Damaged Seagrass In Keys

MARATHON (CBS4) ― A new program to restore the seagrass in an area of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary kicked off Tuesday morning in Marathon.

The Restore-A-Scar program utilizes biodegradable sediment tubes which will be placed inside scars on the seagrass to halt the expansion of the scar and allow the seagrass to re-colonize. Most shallow-water seagrass damage is caused unintentionally by power boaters who stray outside of navigable channels and plow through the shallows.

The initial stage of the program will restore more than 4,000 square feet of damaged seagrass beds at Knights Key Bank, situated on the Florida Bay side of the Seven Mile Bridge near Marathon.

Funding for the program, which comes from individual and corporate donations, is being coordinated by The Ocean Foundation which has already planned additional seagrass restoration projects in other coastal areas of Florida as well as New York, California and Washington.
