McCain Tackles Economic Questions In Fla. Campaign

MIAMI (CBS4) ― Senator John McCain started his day after Thursday's Boca Raton debate with an early morning media session, and if the 71-year-old is slowing down, he doesn't show it.

When CBS4's Michael Williams sat down with McCain, he answered to questions that his main challenger, Mitt Romney, has a lifetime of business experience better suited to dealing with a turbulent U.S. economy.

"I've led in fighting waste from unecessary spending, and I've led back to the Reagan Revolution when I was a foot-soldier," said McCain.

Clearly though, McCain knows his chief strength is built on national security credentials. He explained why he should be the clear choice for Florida.

"My ambition has been America's security, and I've played a role in that for a long time," he said.

Islamic extremism is America's biggest challenge, McCain believes, and this week he fired away at Senator Hillary Clinton for saying she'd set a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq in her first 60 days in officer.

"That is waving the white flag; that is surrender."

McCain argues the U.S. troop surge he supported, when it was not popular, is now quelling violence in Iraq.

"The problem was not the invastion. The problem was the mishandling of the war for nearly four years. Now we're getting it right."

From politics to skyrocketing Florida property insurance, McCain also talked about a National Catastrophic Insurance Fund, something challenger Rudy Giuliani endorses. McCain wants a variation of that idea.
