PHOENIX (AP) ― Republican presidential candidate John McCain is calling Democratic rival Barack Obama a 'very honorable opponent,' though one with whom he has stark differences.

McCain spoke to reporters Monday as Democrats prepared for the first day of their nominating convention in Denver.

"This is a tough presidential campaign we're in," McCain said. "I have a very honorable opponent. There are stark differences between us."

McCain went to a Phoenix high school on Monday to collect the endorsement of Puerto Rican musician Daddy Yankee. That gave McCain, nearly 72, a generational boost, as Yankee excited an auditorium of squealing high school students.

"I believe in his ideals and his proposals," Yankee said.
