Bus Trip To Bring S. Floridians To Inauguration
LAUDERDALE LAKES (CBS4) ―
If you really want to be in Washington for the inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama, you can still get there if you act fast and don't mind a long bus trip. A Lauderdale Lakes woman is organizing what bis turning into a bus caravan from South Florida to DC, so people can get a glimpse of history being made.
Beverly Williams says she has been working non-stop for a month to organize the trip, which started with a single bus.
"We were going to take one bus," she said, "which turned into two buses which turned into three buses and we are about to fill up the third bus."
At $160 per person, it's an affordable way for people to get to DC. Benita Williams signed up, and is taking her pre-teen daughter and teenaged son along.
"When they say where were you they'll be able to say I was there I was in Washington," she told
CBS4's Sharrie Williams. Benita's son Cedric can't wait for the chance to witness the first man of African-American heritage taking the oath of office.
"I think its going to be an awesome experience the first soon to be black president get inaugurated," he said. "It will be an honor to be there."
The "Travelers for Change" bus tour is not a luxury trip. Hotel rooms in Washington are expensive and in short supply, so Beverly said she avoided the problem by making the 17 hour trip one day, and coming back immediately after the inauguration.
"We're going to position ourselves for either the parade or the inauguration," she said.
Beverly has been following the president elect's career for several years. She actually has the nickname "Obama-Momma" she evern went as far as to personally make skull caps in honor of the inauguration
"Most people who are from South Florida don't think of these little things," she said. "You need when its really really cold. So the foot warmers thermal underwear thermal socks."
Hot 105 radio has been helping Beverly Williams publicize the trip, but there are still some seats available. Those would would like to be in the capitol for the inauguration can contact her at
