Students Hope To Rock The Florida Primary Vote

Campaign '08

CORAL GABLES (CBS4) ―

This year's primaries and elections are expected to bring out a record number of voters across country, especially a high number of college students who have truly become engaged in this year's campaigns.

It's a political party of different sort on college campuses around the nation as volunteers and party workers gear their campaigns toward young voters – complete with hip hop music and host of incentives to draw the youth vote out to the polls.

From hip and sexy stickers to free t-shirts, knickknacks and some cases free food.

While it worked for some, students like Brody Shulman at the University of Miami said they hit the polls because they were concerned about issues like the economy.

"It's gonna be our jobs, going out there leaving college" said Shulman.  "You can get the education but if there's no jobs out there, what are we gonna do.  We want to have something for the future."

But not everyone on the UM campus shared Shulman's attitude.

"A lot of students, they don't feel like their vote really matters and stuff and a lot of them are from out of town, they're from out of state and they don't vote absentee which is a shame," said Christie Miller,

But student leaders kept up their campaign on Florida's Primary Day to try and rock the vote.

"I hope that this year will be different because you see a lot of momentum in college students now that wasn't there especially in the last election," said Lindsey Cartee.  "So I hope that we have a voice that makes a difference because you know we really are the future of the country."
