Florida Polls Are Open & Voting Is Underway

Polls Open 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Every Voter In Line By 7:00 p.m. Will Be Allowed To Vote

MIAMI (CBS4) ― The polls are open and voting has begun in Florida's presidential primary.

The vote could solidify one man as the Republican party's front-runner. Recent polls show John McCain and Mitt Romney in a dead heat. Rudy Giuliani needs a win to remain a viable candidate. Mike Huckabee is also lagging in the state.

Turnout is expected to be high statewide. A crucial area for the Republicans is the Interstate 4 corridor between Tampa and Daytona Beach. It's a swing area that's seen much growth and is home to roughly two-thirds of the GOP primary vote.

Among the Democrats, Hillary Clinton leads in the polls over Barack Obama and John Edwards.

More than a million ballots have already been cast, either through the early voting that began January 14 or in absentee ballots returned by mail.

Florida also has a property tax relief proposal on the ballot that could boost GOP turnout. State polls show Republicans favoring the measure by a nearly two-thirds margin.

Voters in Miami-Dade, Florida's largest county, will also reconsider whether they want slot machines installed at three pari-mutuel facilities.

Miami-Dade County voters rejected slot machines in 2005, though voters in Broward County approved them during the same election.

Voters will determine whether to add Las Vegas-style slot machines at Miami Jai-Alai, the Flagler Sports and Entertainment Center dog track and Calder Race Course, which features horses.

Tax dollars from the new gambling attraction would bolster a state education fund.
