MIAMI (CBS4) ― South Florida helped lead Senator Barack Obama's charge to the White House Tuesday night.

Obama won the state of Florida on Tuesday, which helped put him over the top to help him become the new President-elect of the United States. The election was called at 10:57 P.M. on Tuesday night.

In Miami-Dade County, with 98% of the vote counted, Obama led Senator John McCain with 58% of the vote. McCain took 42% of the Miami-Dade County vote. In Broward County, with 98% of the vote counted, Obama won 67% of the vote. McCain followed with 32% of the vote. Obama also led Monroe County. With all precincts reporting, 52% of the vote went to the Democratic Party. The Republican candidate took 48% of the vote.

Obama changed the recent fortunes for Democrats in the state of Florida. In 2000 and 2004, Democrats lost hotly contested races to George W. Bush.

84 percent of the vote was counted, with Senator Obama winning 51 percent of the vote to Senator McCain's 49 percent.

Obama is only the second Democrat to carry the state of Florida since 1976.
