Poll: Obama Pulling Ahead In Swing States

(CBS4.com) A new Quinnipiac University poll of three of the most critical swing states shows Democratic nominee, Senator Barack Obama pulling ahead of Republican nominee, Senator John McCain. The poll, conducted after the first presidential debate, looked at the states of Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

In Florida, before the debate Senator Obama led Senator McCain by a 49 percent to 43 percent margin. After the debate, Senator Obama's lead grew to a 51 percent to 43 percent advantage.

In Ohio, Obama gained a percentage point post-debate. He was leading McCain by a 49 percent to 42 percent advantage. It's now a 50 percent to 42 percent lead.

Pennsylvania voters had been favoring Senator Obama by a 49 percent to 43 percent margin over Senator McCain. After the first debate, Obama's lead in Pennsylvania grew to a 54 percent to 39 percent for Senator McCain.

Looking deeper into the numbers in Florida, McCain leads among male voters by 5 percent. On the flip side, Obama leads McCain among women voters by 20 percent. Among self-described independent voters, Obama has built a 12 percent advantage over Senator McCain.

Florida voters don't have a favorable opinion of McCain's running mate, Governor Sarah Palin. Her numbers have dropped from 47 percent favorable/23 percent unfavorable to, 36 percent favorable/39 percent unfavorable.

The news is different for Obama's running mate, Senator Joe Biden. His numbers have grown to 47 percent favorable, 23 percent unfavorable.

When it comes to Senator Obama and Senator McCain's favorability opinions, Florida voters have a higher favorability opinion of Senator Obama by a 58 percent to 33 percent margin.
