Governor Crist Rallies For GOP In Ft. Lauderdale
FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ―
Governor Charlie Crist is hitting the campaign trail here in Florida for Republican presidential nominee Senator John McCain. The popular governor took center stage a campaign rally in Fort Lauderdale Saturday.
While Crist has been at McCain's side every time the nominee has visited Florida, he has never endorsed McCain on television or in radio ads. Crist says he hasn't been asked, but will do anything the party requests.
"I think he really carries the message for the citizens of Florida," McCain supporter Dennis Conklin told CBS4 Reporter Joan Murray.
That includes leading a "Park to Booth" rally in Fort Lauderdale Saturday. Democrats outnumber Republicans in Broward County and the GOP knows if they want to win it on Election Day, they must turn out the vote.
"We're the minority party, but we know what we have to do to carry the rest of the state. It happens here in Broward," said Broward County Republican Chairman Chip Lamarca.
People are turning out in droves across South Florida for early voting. In Miramar, the wait was over three hours throughout the week. The lines didn't thwart people determined to have their say. "No matter the wait, I am determined to vote today," insisted Yolanda Davis.
That determination was just as strong in Tamarac, where the crowd used umbrellas to shelter themselves from the sun. The attitude was best summed up by people like Leonardo Ganan, "This is the most important election of my lifetime."
The popular Governor was at one time rumored to be on the Vice Presidential short-list for McCain, but since the introduction of Sarah Palin, Crist has been conspicuous by his absence.
