On June 20, 2001, the Bryant Peney Act was signed into law by then Florida Governor Jeb Bush. The law allows prosecution for murder in the first degree (Felony Murder) when a perpetrator unlawfully kills a law enforcement officer or another individual when they are committing, attempting to commit or escaping from the immediate scene of a felony while resisting an officer with violence.
