Public Tours Of Ships Offered During Fleet Week

FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ― Thousands of sailors will hit Ft. Lauderdale beach during Fleet Week at the end of the month.

This year's roster of ships will not be as large as in years past, but for the first time since the September 11th terrorist attacks the public will be able to tour the warships. Anyone wishing to tour a ship must pre-register with Broward Navy Days.

Those who wish to participate in a tour must follow strict regulations which include no skirts, no weapons, and a picture ID is required.

Fleet Week will run from April 27th through May 2nd.  Ships that will be calling on Port Everglades include the guided missile destroyer USS Forrest Sherman (DDG-98), the Los Angeles class submarine USS Toledo (SSN-769), the Coast Guard cutter USCGC Tahoma (WMEC 908), the landing ship USS Ashland (LSD 48) and the Canadian oiler – the HNCS Preserver.

In addition to seeing the sites, the sailors are also scheduled to visit area hospitals, schools and nursing homes. They'll also help build homes, participate in a blood drive and practice emergency shipboard damage control.
