CBS4 Your Money: Consumer-Saving Tips

MIAMI (CBS4) ― CBS4 Your Money on Thursday reports on the various ways people can save money as inflation creeps up along with prices at the store.

                  Controlling Food Prices

At the supermarket, a consumer should look for bulk-food bargains rather than smaller, fancy packaged products that cost a lot more per serving.

Fresh produce is usually a lot cheaper than frozen products. Making out a strict shopping list and sticking to it can help avoid last-minute, impulse buying of foods you may not really need.

                                             Dining Out

Family-style restaurants can feed large families for less money than more traditional dining. Sharing dinners helps too, though many restaurants do add extra sharing charges; try to avoid ordering soda and fancy bottled waters.

Moneyinstructor.com advises bringing lunch to work can save you more than $1500 annually.  It also recommends bringing mid-day snacks from home and avoid vending machines.

Brewing coffee at home can potentially save  about $3 a day or more.

                                           Saving at the Pump

Fill up in the morning when it's cooler. Avoid all un-necessary driving, and plan errands all in one trip.

Clean out the truck, because extra weight cuts down on a vehicle's  fuel economy.  A clean air and fuel filter, along with a tune-up, can help extend gas mileage. Also make sure tires are properly inflated.

                                           Saving Banking Charges

It's important to check credit cards, ATM's and checking accounts to learn some good money savers.

Moneyinstructor.com suggests avoid so-called "Foreign ATM Fees" by only using your bank's  ATM, which should save about $4 a trip.

Linking free-checking account to a savings account can help avoid bouncing a check, which can save about $120 a year, including as much as $30 for each over-draft charge.

One can save money on high interest rate plastic by transferring outstanding balances to a lower rate credit card.
