American Airlines Inspects Planes, Cancels Flights

CBS News Interactive: Eye On Air Safety

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ― American Airlines said it canceled nearly 1,000 flights as it continues to inspect the wiring on some of its jMD-80 ets. The airline canceled four inbound and four outbound flights at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Wednesday but no reported flights were canceled in Miami or West Palm Beach.

Added to Tuesday's 460 cancellations, that could bring the two-day total to over 1,000 lost flights.

Barbara Good  told CBS4 Carey Codd that she had to fly to New Mexico on Continental instead of American. She explained, "They treat you very well, but they don't tell you anything. Everything I found out, I found out by myself."

Federal inspectors found problems with wiring work done two weeks ago, although the airline says passenger safety was never jeopardized.

Airline officials said the flights would have averaged more than 100 passengers, meaning that more than 100,000 travelers could have been left scrambling to book new flights.
