A South Florida mother has come up with 10,001 ways to live large on a budget. Actually, it's the title of her new book, but before you even start to read it, there is one thing you should know to save: The key to savings is thinking before you shop.
For example, Lourdes Mendes, a mother of three, has tried something new. She is selling her daughters' clothes on consignment.
"Instead of giving away five bags of clothes, I am giving away four and bringing one here," said Mendes to
CBS4's Jorge Estevez.
The items in the bag went to The Children's Exchange, a store in Coral Gables where women, like Mendes, lend their clothes for the store to sell at a discount. She makes a profit, and others get a bargain.
"This offers parents a way to cut back on their budgets," said Rebecca Millares-Macias, one of the store's owners who sees the savings.
"Sometimes when you walk into a store, you walk in and buy three things for a hundred dollars. When you come here, you can get ten things for a hundred dollars," said Millares-Macias.
And According to Sharon Harvey Rosenberg, who wrote 10,001 Ways to Live Large on a Small Budget, the best way to save is always think before you spend.
"We hit the cash register; our cart is full of stuff, and do we really need it?" said Rosenberg, who uses consignment shopping as an example of thinking and saving.
You can make money by selling your things through consignment.
"You can save money by buying something that is nicely gently worn," said Rosenberg.
"In the process of saving money, you can think about what you need, how you spend your money and about the things you enjoy," said Rosenberg. "If you have a limited pie of money, you want to cut the slice you want the best."
Rosenberg will be speaking this weekend at the
Miami International Book Fair.
