Dade Utility Bill Program Overwhelmed, Suspended

MIAMI (CBS4) ― A popular program that helped people pay their utility bills will be suspended Monday, just when the need was the greatest, because Miami-Dade has been unable to process all of the people who have applied, and is not sure if funding will be available in the future.

The Miami-Dade Community Action Agency's  Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)  will stop accepting applications for assistance with electricity and gas bills Monday, November 2nd.

Officials cite an overwhelming amount of applications as the cause for the temporary suspension of the program. Once they process all the applications they will determine how many more customers they will be able to help, but for now, they have not announced when the suspension will be lifted.

The agency must also determine if there will be funding for for program.

The Agency's program is intended for people who are having trouble paying their utility bill, not for people who are in imminent danger of having their utilities shut off.

Customers that are in imminent danger of having their electrical services disconnected will be served through the Care to Share Program, at the CAA Neighborhood Enrichment Centers.
