Does It Really Do That: Aqua Globes

For anyone that's come home to a dried out, dead plant because they didn't water it, here's a "Does It Really Do That?" that you may be interested in.
The products are called Aqua Globes, and according to the TV ads, they water the plants for you.
"All you do is fill the Aqua Globe with water and press it into the soil. Your plant stays perfectly watered for up to two weeks," claims the commercial.
But does it really do that?
CBS4's Al Sunshine asked garden guru Doug Oster to help him put it to the test.
The test subjects - three peace lilies and three potted mums.
For two weeks, Oster will not water one of each of the plants. Two of the plants he'll water by and hand and the remaining plants he'll let Aqua Globes do the watering.
After purchasing the Aqua Globes, Sunshine and Oster followed the directions and filled the hand blown glass globes with water. Oster felt it should be enough for the two week period.
The next step, according to the infomercial and the outside of the box, is to just press it into the soil. But on the first try, Oster broke the globe. He then found instructions inside the box which stated users should place a small stick or tool in the soil first because the globe is delicate. After successfully planting the globes in the soil, the test was on.
After two weeks, the results were clear. While all the peace lilies looked fine, the potted mums told the story. The ones that had not been watered look wilted while the ones Oster watered by hand looked fine. As for the ones watered by the Aqua Globes, they looked as good as those watered by hand. Oster said he's sold.
"I love them. Once I got the hang of it, it was perfect," said Oster. "It actually has the perfect amount of water in there. It only takes what it needs which is nice. As the soil dries out, it starts to release the water."
Aqua Globes are sold in stores, two for $10.
