Your Digital Self Is "There"
A Virtual Self On The Website Called "There.Com"
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
The world of gaming is changing. Virtual characters designed by your kids live in a virtual world. Now, a South Florida company is getting in on the action by charging you to make your virtual character more stylish.
"You can blow a kiss," Erica Watkins told
CBS4 Reporter Jorge Estevez as she went on-line to show him how the website works. Watkins is learning the rules of a virtual world. "I have brown hair and brown eyes, and she is blonde and green eyes," said Watkins as she laughed in amazement.
Watkins is talking about her avatar or virtual self on the community known as "
There.com." This 20-year-old South Florida can interact with anyone, anytime, or anywhere.
"I can wave to her," she said as she commanded her virtual self to make friends with another female avatar.
There.com is different than Myspace or Facebook because it's in 3-D and this one can cost you. Users have the option of purchasing credits and then use those credits to buy things in the virtual world.
That is where Dean Schwartz comes in. He is president of
NACO USA based in Miami. The Latino themed-clothing company has just signed on, to sell their line on there.com.
"You can buy a virtual Naco t-shirt for your avatar then there is also the opportunity to buy one in the real world as well," said Schwartz.
Your virtual self can wear a NACO T-shirt for less than $3. "I am wearing the shirt on the computer, and I am wearing the shirt in person." In real life, the Naco T-shirt can be up to 30 dollars. That is a bargain which works for Watkins virtual self who likes the opportunity to be stylish at a discount.
"It's cool, so, why not," said Watkins. So far, Naco USA has sold 150 t-shirts in less than two weeks.
