CBS4 Your Money: Meat Recall, Economy

Financial Analysts Say The Economy Has Stalled

MIAMI (CBS4) ― Meat Recall

A Chicago company is recalling a line of its beef products because it may be contaminated with potentially deadly bacteria.

JSM Meat Holdings Co. has recalled its "Morrel Beef" products in Florida and 11 other states because it may contain E. coli. The recall affects 30 pound, 60 pound and 47-gallon barrels of bulk beef which are typically used by ground beef processors.

The problem was discovered by the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service. Officials say an "undetermined amount of beef" is being recalled.

The other states affected by the recall are Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Pennsylvania and
Wisconsin.

Economy

As food and gas prices continue to rise, there is some good news in the latest economic numbers which show that the U.S. economy is not getting worse.

Many financial forecasters say while the economy may not be getting any worse, don't expect a quick turn around. A stalled housing market combined with the rising prices of food and gas lead many of the nation's economists to believe the country is either in a recession or will soon be in one. They predict the 'national' housing slump may improve later this year. But they also believe the unemployment figures will worsen.

Gas Prices

One of the biggest problems many in South Florida have to deal with it the skyrocketing price of gas. Prices across Broward, Miami and Monroe counties are averaging around $3.85 for a gallon of regular unleaded. Some gas stations in Miami Beach and Palm Beach County have already raised the price to more than $4 for a gallon of regular unleaded. Triple-A predicts travel over the Memorial Day holiday weekend will be less than in previous years because of the high gas prices.
