S. Florida Gas Prices Reach High For 2009
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
Crude oil prices dropped last week, but that's not being reflected in the price at the pump for Florida drivers, according to the latest gas price survey by the Florida AAA. Wholesale prices are up 32%, and pump prices could go up another ten cents a gallon. In South Florida, prices are at a 2009 high.
The national average price of unleaded regular gasoline is now $2.69 per gallon. Florida drivers are paying a bit more, on the average at $2.72 a gallon for unleaded regular fuel. In South Florida, CBS4.com's Eye on the Pump finds prices in the Miami area average $278 a gallon. A month ago, they were $2.45 a gallon.
"While the fourth quarter is typically the time of year when retail gasoline prices are at their lowest, in coming weeks there's a chance we could see Florida prices between $2.80 and $2.90," said Gregg Laskoski, managing director of public relations, AAA Auto Club South.
The price increase comes as a bit of a surprise. "This is with excess supply and little demand," Laskoski said.
Just one month ago, national prices for a gallon of unleaded regular averaged $2.46, while Florida prices averaged $2.40.
The lowest South Florida price in the last 2 years was on New Years Day, when prices in the Miami area averaged $1.68 a gallon for regular unleaded.
The last time gas prices were this high was in mid-June 2009.
