Spotlight on Transit: Fares Just Went Up
The Cost Of Using Public Transit In Miami-Dade Went Up By 33 Percent This Week
MIAMI DADE (CBS4) ―
Earlier in the week, the transit system had its second fare hike since 2005, and raised the base fare for riding the bus or Metrorail to $2 from $1.50. In 2005, the base fare was increased to $1.50 from $1.25.
Monthly passes have also increased from $75 to $100 and discounted passes now cost $50.
The county said the new fares are in line with the cost of public transit in other major cities.
In Chicago, fares range from $1.75 to $2 per ride. Extra fees apply for transfers and discounts are given for riders with transit cards and month long passes. In New York City, public buses and trains cost $2 per ride and discounts are given to riders with monthly passes.
Washington D.C. offers its riders the most options. Fares range from $1.25 to $4.10 depending time of day and if riders use a pre-paid card.
