Windows XP Given New Life

REDMOND, Wash (CBS4) ― Having run into a wall of opposition from both users and businesses, Microsoft has decided to give the Windows XP operating system new life. The company had planned on suspending sales of the last generation operating system on all new computers, but will now allow XP to be sold on cheap desktops and laptops until 2010.

Coincidentally, 2010 is a rough date the company is working for on Windows 7, which would take over for Microsoft Vista.

Computer experts think the decision to allow the continued sales of XP is because the low-cost systems don't have enough power to run Vista. Also, many of the cheapest laptops run Linux, which is an open source rival to Windows.

The extension for XP for the cheapest laptops, or netbooks, covered machines that have no more than 1 GB of RAM, a hard drive up to 80 GB, a processor running no faster than 1Ghz and have a screen no larger than 10.2 inches, and no touch screen.

The new extension will not be applied to any new machines exceeding those specifications, meaning XP will no longer be offered by manufacturers on this type of system.
