Theaters Increasing Movie Ticket & Popcorn Prices
Theaters Blame Corn Costs For Increases
Ticket Prices Could Go Up By $2 This Summer
AVENTURA (CBS4) ―
The rising cost of corn is forcing some movie theater concession stands to pump up the price of popcorn.
AMC has announced that along with an increase in popcorn they will also increase the price of tickets for some customers.
"I noticed today it was suddenly $8," said Lois Glass, a regular moviegoer who said it's getting tougher and tougher to afford the ticket and concession prices.
At the Coral Ridge AMC Theater, student discounts have been eliminated. The AMC Theater in Aventura also ended student discounts and raised the price for seniors by about a dollar for all showings. All AMC theaters have raised the price of popcorn by about 25-cents.
Moviegoers like Maggie Caudill and her son who used to see a movie every few weeks say because of the rising prices they're going to have to cut back on one of their favorite activities.
"We might only see three movies a year now," said Caudill. "You do not buy a glass of Coke for $5 or popcorn for $4.75. That's nearly $10. It makes it completely unaffordable.
The increases at AMC will vary by theater.
Advertising Age warns that movie ticket prices are expected to spike by as much as 30% this year.
