House Approves School Supply Sales Tax Holiday
TALLAHASSEE (CBS4) ―
Sales tax holidays for hurricane and back to school supplies are one step closer to becoming a reality in 2009.
On Monday the Florida House approved the holidays as part of a large bill which also repeals tax exemptions for newspaper and magazines delivered by mail, tax exemptions for most charter fishing trips and repeals a partial exemption on pinball and other arcade games.
The measure also calls for an $18 thousand tax cap for purchases of yachts and airplanes.
If approved by the Senate, the back to school supplies sales tax holiday would be held the weekend of August 8th. It would apply to clothing and shoes under $50 and supplies under $10. The hurricane supplies sales tax holiday would run from June 5th through 7th and apply to supplies needed to weather a storm including generators, batteries and shutters.
While the measure would generate $24 million in new revenue, the sales tax holidays and the tax breaks for planes and yachts could cost the state $45 million.
The measure now goes to the Senate which has no equivalent bill
