Top 10 Tips To Save Money Every Month

MIAMI (CBS4) ― From the checkout counter to the pump, it seems that our dollars just don't stretch as far as they used to. But if you're in the know, you can save money on things you use every day. It may be a little bit here and there, but over time, it can really add up.

So what are some of the secrets to saving money?

Here's CBS4 consumer reporter Al Sunshine's top ten list:

10. Look for generics and store brands
More and more stores carry their own brand of products - everything from canned vegetables to cereals to paper towels and trash bags. They cost less than nationally advertised brands, and the quality is good.

9. Ask about weekly specials at the store
An offer of "5 for $5" could really mean a buck per item, and that means you won't have to buy more than you'll use to get the sale price.

8. Get a store loyalty card
They reward frequent shoppers with coupons and special bargains.

7. Print e-coupons from supermarket websites
You'll often find bargains that aren't advertised elsewhere.

6. Ask your store if they'll match a competitors' prices
Some won't, most will so make sure you bring in the other guy's ad.

5. Sign up for savings programs
More and more stores including drugstores and discounters are initiating these types of programs.

4. Look for gas stations that offer cash discounts
Three or four cents a gallon will add up over time.

3. Boost your gas mileage
The easiest way is to keep your tires properly inflated tires and lightening up your load by taking that junk out of your trunk.

2. Save on your electric bill
Unplug computers, other electronics, and small appliances when you're not using them.  Don't forget to check the A/C thermostat, too.

And what could end up being the biggest money saving tip of all …

1. Fight for the lowest credit card rate possible
Threaten to cancel your card, and see if the card company will drop their interest rate to keep your business.
