Seafood "Cheap Eats" In South Florida

Almost Everyone Loves The Taste Of Seafood

MIAMI (CBS4) ― The stock market may be crashing and taking lots of money with it, but people still have to eat. So, if you have a craving for seafood, but have a limited budget, these might be the places for you.

Garcia's Seafood Grille and Fish Market on the Miami River has been providing seafood in the area for around 40 years. The restaurant was once a gas station, but now is a popular lunch and dinner spot for tourists and locals. Still, he owners say it wasn't always easy and they remember what it's like to live on a budget.

"We struggled for many years," said co-owner Luis Garcia. "We pushed, we willed it to happen."

The restaurant features many selections under $10 including items like ceviche and various sandwiches.

In Fort Lauderdale, on the Seminole River you can find the South Port Raw Bar. Owner Buddy Sherman worked as a busboy at the bar in 1979; he later purchased the establishment 10 years later. He points to locking up clients and their families for years and years.

"The greatest thing is to hear people say 'my father brought me here and now, I'm bringing my kids here,'" Sherman said.

You can find items like New England Clam Chowder, the steamed peal and old bay shrimp all under $10.

Just off of the Federal Highway in Fort Lauderdale and you will stumble across a seafood dive known as Tarks. There you will see oysters shucked fresh daily. The beer battered fish is said to melt in your mouth and the conch salad are both found for under $10.

Finally, if you're on SW 8th Street, you can find some great, but cheap, seafood at the Bahama's Fish and Seafood Market. Not a lot of people speak English at the restaurant, but items like a snapper filet in creole sauce with an order of rice and sweet potato plaintains will run you around $7.99.
