Eggelletion Plea Delayed In Corruption Case

Lawyer Granted Three Week Extension

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ― Former Broward County Commissioner Josephus Eggelletion appeared in federal court in Fort Lauderdale Wednesday in connection with his corruption case.

Eggelletion's lawyer, Johnny McCray requested an extension and it was granted, which gives Eggelletion three more weeks to decide how he will plea. McCray said the extra time was needed to review hundreds of hours of recordings involved in the case, according to CBS4 News partner The Miami Herald.

Eggelletion was charged in September, along with two Broward businessmen and a Bahamian attorney, with conspiring to launder $900,000 from a fraudulent investment scheme.

Tuesday, a federal grand jury indicted businessman Joel "Jodi" Williams and attorney Sidney Cambridge on five counts of money laundering and one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering. If convicted, they face a maximum penalty of 20-years in prison and a $500,000 fine.

Federal authorities allege Eggelletion took $23-thousand from undercover FBI agents to help with the money laundering scheme in the Bahamas. He allegedly also helped undercover agents set up an account to wire $900-thousand to an offshore bank account for a fraud scheme. Federal authorities said Eggelletion was supposed to get kickbacks.
