Argument Over Can Of Beer Leads To Shooting

FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ― An argument over a can of beer on Tuesday afternoon ended with a college student shot according to the Broward County Sheriff's Office. The BSO said Lorenzo Jones, 22, was shot by Ricky Von Welch, 46, outside of Swifty's Apartments on NW 31st Avenue.

According to the BSO, Welch and Jones got into the argument just after 3 p.m. Jones was visiting Welch during his break from college. At some point, Welch knocked the can of beer from Jones' hand which prompted a standoff between the two. Both men armed themselves with folding knives, but wound up dropping the knives.

However, the BSO said Jones allegedly slapped Welch in the face. After this, Welch went into his apartment and returned with a gun and threatened to kill Jones. Jones allegedly said, "What are you going to do, shoot me?" according to the BSO. Welch then fired one shot into Jones' abdomen.

Jones remains in the Broward General Medical Center due to the shooting.
