Former Judge Heads To Court On Felony Charges

MIAMI (CBS4) ― A former Miami-Dade judge took the stand Monday, accused of swindling more than $80,000 from a nonprofit college grant. The school in question was one he helped found in the late 1990s after being disbarred in a corruption case.

55-year-old Phillip Davis insisted he did nothing wrong and denied taking the money intended to help the poor. David faces several felony charges, including money laundering and grand theft, for allegedly sending bogus invoices to skim money intended for the college. He was arrested on the charges in October 2005.

Davis helped found the Miami-Dade Resident College after he tearfully admitted to snorting cocaine in his chambers in 1993; he claimed drug and alcohol addiction led him down the wrong path. Jurors acquitted him on the bribery and extortion charges.

Jurors were not informed about his previous allegations, or that Davis was disbarred; they did learn of his law degree.
