Cuba Giving Raises To Retirees & Court Employees

Pay Increases Will Affect Almost One In Five Cubans

Cuba Says More Pay Raises On The Way

HAVANA (AP) ― Cuba's government has announced sizable raises for retirees and court employees. Officials also are promising future pay hikes for other government workers, saying the increases would target lower-income islanders in a bid to reduce inequalities.

The pay increases will affect almost one in five Cubans. They're the first since 2005 and the first since Raul Castro replaced his ailing brother Fidel as president. Since taking office in February, he has done away with some of Cuba's most-despised restrictions on daily life, bolstering his popularity and sparking rumors that more changes are coming.

The increases are tiny by international standards, but they will go a long way in a country where the government controls more than 90 percent of the economy and most people live rent-free. The communist system also provides free education and health care and a ration program for basic food needs.
