Family Of Anti-Castro Rebel Awarded $94.6 Million

MIAMI (CBS4) ― The family of a former senior Havana police official who claimed that Cuban government officials had him killed received a major damage settlement in a Miami court.

Circuit Judge Robert N. Scola Jr. awarded $94.6 million in damages to relatives of Aldo Vera Sr. who was a founding member of an anti-Fidel Castro group; he died in Puerto Rico in 1976.

In accordance with a U.S. law passed in 1966, victims of terrorist groups or countries like Cuba that are designated as state sponsors of terrorism to sue for damages. Families who have successfully sued Cuba try to recover awards from Cuban assets frozen in U.S. bank accounts.

Last month, a jury awarded nearly $253 million to the children of Rafael del Pino Siero -- a former friend of Castro who died in jail.
