Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Peter Adrian awarded more than $1 billion in damages to a Cuban-American who was involved in the 1967 capture and killing of Ernesto "Che" Guevara. Judge Adrian said the award was to send a message to the Cuban government.
The award was the result of a lawsuit filed by Gustavo Villodo. He blamed Guevara, Fidel Castro and others for his father's 1959 suicide in Cuba. The Villodo family fled to the United States after the suicide.
The 76-year-old Villodo would take part in the failed Bay of Pigs invasion and took part in the capture of Guevara in Bolivia.
Cuba's current government offered no defense.
