Ban On Cuban Medical Degrees Progresses

TALLAHASSEE (AP) ― Americans who get their medical degree in Cuba would be prohibited from practicing medicine in Florida under a bill headed to the House floor.

The measure is aimed at students who accept scholarships from the Cuban government to attend the Latin American School of Medical Sciences in Havana.

About 150 American students are currently enrolled in the school and would be prevented from getting medical licenses in Florida if they move here. There aren't currently any graduates of the school licensed to practice in the state.

The bill (HB 685) was approved in the House Healthcare Council. But a Senate version (SB 2866) of the bill is yet to gain any traction and hasn't had a committee hearing.
