Word just arrived that Dan Paul has died. He was 85. Paul was one of the Founding Fathers of Miami-Dade County's Home Rule Charter. Essentially he was the Thomas Jefferson of Dade, writing the 1957 charter that guaranteed the citizens of Dade County the right to govern themselves and not leave critical decisions to a bunch of politicians in Tallahassee.
The financial outlook at Jackson Memorial Hospital is far worse than first expected, according to figures released Tuesday morning at a meeting of the Public Health Trust, which governs the hospital system. Board members were told the hospital has a $200 million deficit for 2009, four times what had been projected, and faces an even bigger deficit for 2010.
