Grads Make The Grade And Make It To FPL
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
A group of Miami-Dade College graduates got their diplomas on Thursday, and they also got job offers to go along with them.
For the 17 men and women who earned a degree in the Electrical Power Technology program, Thursday was more than a graduation ceremony. It was also the day they learned they were being hired by Florida Power and Light at the Turkey Point Nuclear Reservation. FPL, along with the college, developed this special program three years ago and this is the second class to graduate.
"This is very important to us to get that qualified candidate that is local to our area because that helps with retention," said Bill Jefferson, vice president of Turkey Point.
Jefferson said developing this program allows FPL to make sure the students are trained to FPL's needs.
"Here we know exactly what we are getting. We helped develop the program working with the college, so our training program can finish these group of people off," said Jefferson.
And for the students that lure is a steady job with good pay. The starting salary for these students with their new associate degrees is $45,000.
Officials for both FPL and the college say this program is vital. In the next five years, 35 percent of the workers in the nuclear power industry will be ready to retire. So for programs like this the future is bright.
