Dolphins Cut Kicker Jay Feely

DAVIE (CBS4.com) ― The Miami Dolphins cut kicker Jay Feely, just one year removed from setting the team's single-season record for field goal percentage. The kicker felt like his days were numbered when new Dolphins president Bill Parcells came to town.

The kicking job will now go to undrafted rookie Dan Carpenter. He connected on 73 percent of his kicks in college at the University of Montana, which is in the Football Championship Division (I-AA). He also served as the team's punter in 2006, averaging 42 yards per punt.

Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano may have discarded Feely's performance last year when making the decision. Feely made 21 of 23 field goals in 2007, and was one of the only positives from the Dolphins' 1-15 disaster.

"The decision was based purely on numbers, on performance and Campbell's outperformed him right now. That's the bottom line," Sparano said.

Many believed Feely's penchant for speaking his mind clashed with the Tuna's style, and may have been a factor in the kicker's release.
