Dolphins Shock New England 38-13, First Season Win

Pats 21 Game Regular Season Winning Streak Snapped

FOXBORO, MA (CBS4) ― The Miami Dolphins have won their first game of the 2008-2009 regular season, trouncing the New England Patriots 38-13. The Fins carried the day on an amazing performance by Ronnie Brown, who rushed for four touchdowns and passed another one to Anthony Fasano, stunning New England's defense and snapping the Pats 21-game regular season winning streak.

The Patriots, who had been favored to win on their home turf despite the loss of star quarterback Tom Brady, were dominated by the Dolphins from the first quarter, when Brown capped an 8-play drive with a 2 yard run for the first touchdown.

The Patriots got on the board with 11:31 to go in the second quarter on a 37-yard field goal off the toe of Stephen Gostkowski, a 3 point gain on a 13-play drive.

That was answered almost immediately by a 15 yard carry by Brown for the 'Fins second TD at 8:19.

The Patriots put another 3 points up with 4:54 left in the second quarter, after they were unable to take an 8 play drive past the goal line, but the good feeling for New England fans was short lived when Brown carried for 5 yards with just 1 minute left in the first half to give the fins their third TD, going into the locker room at 21-6.

Brown continued to dominate the game in the third, but this time his TD effort came in a pass to Fasano with 5:46 left in the third, making the score to 28-6.

The Pats scored their only touchdown of the game at 3:20 in the third when Jabar Gaffney carried for 5 yards on a Matt Cassel pass.

That was the last time New England produced a point, as the 4th quarter was all Dolphins. Ronnie Brown made a spectacular 62-yard run just seconds into the 4th, leaving the Pats defense in the dust, to bring the score to 35-13 as New England fans could be seen streaming for the exits.

Kicker Dan Carpenter put the icing on the cake for the Dolphins with a 39-yard field goal with 6:08 left in the 4th, to give the fins 38 points.

With under 2 minutes left to go in the game, head coach Tony Sparano was doused by Gatorade on the sidelines in celebration of his first regular season win as Dolphins coach.

Brown was the true standout of the game, rushing for more than 100 yards.
