Justin Smiley refused to be glued to his TV during the Dolphins' bye week. Everytime he did sneak a peek at the New Orleans game, Drew Brees & Co. were putting points on the board.
"We've got our hands full," said Smiley on Monday as the Dolphins started to prepare for the league's best offense.
"They're just playing great football. Their offense is getting it done. It's unbelievable. Those guys can score points."
They sure can.
The Saints are averaging 430 yards and 38.4 points per game, and Brees has only thrown two interceptions to 14 touchdowns this season.
"Statistically they're doing pretty good. We all saw that the other night," defensive back Sean Smith said.
"You watch Drew play and the way he commands his offense, he's definitely one of the best. He's going to keep attacking, attacking and he's precise. You just have to understand that regardless if your man is covered or not, he's going to throw it up and give his guy a shot."
The Dolphins' secondary has already been tested this season and are hoping to put their experience to good use.
Miami got torched by Peyton Manning during Monday Night Football two weeks ago and gave up 229 yards and two touchdowns to Atlanta's Matt Ryan in Week 1.
"I think having the experience being in certain situations, it's good that we've played teams like that," said linebacker Akin Ayodele, who will be playing against brother and Saints' nose tackle Remi Ayodele.
"We kind of know a little bit of what to expect. We have to come up with plays."
That's going to be tough because Brees doesn't necessarily have a favorite target.
Marques Colton has 25 receptions for 394 yards, Devery Henderson has 241 yards and a touchdown, and tight end Jeremy Shockey has three touchdowns and 199 yards.
Tailback Reggie Bush has also gotten involved in the passing game he has 15 catches for 128 yards.
Smith, a rookie, is looking forward to the opportunity.
"This is the NFL, every week you're going to play someone pretty good. As a secondary, you look forward to these kind of games because you get to make your mark on the NFL," Smith said.
"Now that I have my opportunity, I'm going to try to make the best of it."
The Saints are off to their best start since 1993. On Sunday, Brees had 369 yards and four touchdowns as New Orleans (5-0) handed the Giants their first loss of the season.
Brees torched the Giants' league-leading defense, and seven different players scored for New Orleans.
"I think you have to keep their offense off the field. I don't think you want to try to get into a scoring contest with these people and let them do their thing and you do your thing or any of those things," Miami coach Tony Sparano said.
"You have to try to turn the game into as much of a one-dimensional game as you can. If I'm correct, I think they're number two in the league in rushing the football. They rush it really well as well, so we've got to do something to not let the candy store be open to everything right now."
