It's Official Dolphins Draft Jake Long Number One
C. Long, Ryan Go 2 and 3; Kenny Phillips Goes To Giants
NEW YORK, NY (CBS4/AP) ―
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell made it official at 3:03 PM. "With the number one pick in the NFL Draft the Miami Dolphins select Jake Long."
Long signed a five-year contract with the Dolphins on Tuesday worth $57.75 million, $30 million of it guaranteed.
After Long, the Rams went with Virginia defensive end Chris Long, son of hall of famer Howie Long. The Atlanta Falcons drafting third selected Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan.
The Oakland Raiders went with speed at number four selecting Arkansas running back Darren McFadden. Mcfadden had been the Heisman Trophy runner-up in 2006 and 2007. With the sixth pick in the draft, the Kansas City Chiefs took LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey whom many had as the best player in the draft.
The New York Jets crowd in Radio City Music Hall exploded when they heard their team make a pick. New York went with Ohio State defensive end Vernon Gholston.
With the seventh pick in the draft, the New Orleans Saints landed defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis. The Saints landed the pick in a deal with the New England Patriots just moments before the selection. The Baltimore Ravens, who were drafting eight, traded the pick to Jacksonville and the Jaguars took Florida Gator defensive end Derrick Harvey.
The Cincinnati Bengals followed the Jaguars and selected USC linebacker Keith Rivers. The New England Patriots, who traded down with the Saints, took Tennessee linebacker Jerod Mayo.
The Buffalo Bills have added Leodis McKelvin to their team, getting the Troy defensive back with the 11th pick in the NFL draft. With the 12th selection in the draft, the Denver Broncos took Boise State offensive tackle Ryan Clady. Meanwhile, the Carolina Panthers picked running back Jonathan Stewart with the 13th selection.
The Chicago Bears shored-up their offensive line with the selection of Vanderbilt offensive tackle Chris Williams. With the 15th selection and second pick in the first round, the Chiefs selected Virginia offensive guard Branden Albert. The Chiefs traded with the Detriot Lions to move up and take Albert.
Arizona, with the 16th pick, took Tennessee State defensive back Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. At 17, the Lions grabbed Boston College offensive tackle Gosder Cherilus. The Ravens traded up in the first round with the Houston Texans and selected Delaware quarterback Joe Flacco.
The Carolina Panthers traded up to the 19th pick with the Philadelphia Eagles and took Pittsburgh offensive tackle Jeff Otah. The Tampa Bay Bucs picked Kansas cornerback Aqib Talib with the 20th selection in the first round.
Sam Baker is an Atlanta Falcon after being selected with the 21st choice in the NFL draft. The Falcons landed the pick in a trade with the Washington Redskins. At 22, the Dallas Cowboys bolstered their backfield with the selection of Arkansas running back Felix Jones.
The Pittsburgh Steelers picked Illinois running back Rashard Mendenhall with the 23rd selection in the first round. With the 24th pick, the Tennessee Titans grabbed the fastest player in the draft running back NFL draft running back Chris Johnson out of East Carolina. The Cowboys took South Florida cornerback Mike Jenkins with their second pick, number 25, of the first round.
The Houston Texans picked up offensive tackle Duane Brown of Virginia Tech with the 26th selection in the NFL draft. The San Diego Chargers used the 27th overall pick to get secondary help, selecting Arizona's Antoine Cason. The Seattle Seahawks chose Southern Cal defensive lineman Lawrence Jackson with the 28th pick in the NFL draft after acquiring the selection from Dallas.
The San Francisco 49ers have grabbed North Carolina defensive lineman Kentwan Balmer with the 29th pick in the NFL draft. The Niners landed the selection in a trade with Indianapolis. The Jets followed by taking Purdue tight-end Dustin Keller with the 30th pick.
The Super Bowl champion New York Giants completed the first round by selecting Miami Hurricane safety Kenny Phillips. It is the fourteenth year in a row that a Hurricane is drafted in the first round.
In the second round, the Hurricanes got another player selected as defensive lineman Calais Campbell went to the Arizona Cardinals with the 50th overall pick.
