Green Bay Inquires About Jason Taylor
Packers could be looking to add pass rushing help
GREEN BAY, Wisc. (CBS4.com) ―
The Green Bay Packers have made what is being described as an "exploratory inquiry" with the Dolphins about Jason Taylor's status, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette.
The Packers are in need of a pass rusher because the team's pass rush specialist, Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila, is rehabilitating a surgically repaired knee. If a deal is made, Taylor would team with Aaaron Kampman to form a formidable defensive end tandem in Green Bay.
Taylor played for the Packers defensive coordinator, Bob Sanders, and defensive tackles coach Robert Nunn in the early part of this decade. In Green Bay, Sanders uses the same defense he used when he was with the Dolphins from 2001-2004.
Complicating matters for the Packers is the contract of Gbaja-Biamila. His salary is $6.1 million dollars in 2008 and jumps to $7.3 million in 2009. If the Pack were considering letting Gbaja-Biamila go, it would have salary cap implications.
Compounding the issue is what is believed to be the Dolphins asking price for Taylor. The Fins have reportedly been asking for a second-round draft pick for Taylor. That might be too high of a price for the Packers, who last year declined to offer more than a fifth-round pick for WR Randy Moss.
Moss went on to put up some of the most prolific numbers for a receiver in the history of the NFL with the Patriots, who acquired him for a fourth-round pick.
Also, Taylor has stated he only wants to play one more year, which would make the price of a second-round, or possibly even a third-round draft pick even more exorbitant.
