Jets coach Rex Ryan had an off-season feud with Dolphins' linebacker Channing Crowder, something he said he regretted earlier this week. Crowder, an avid trash-talker, continued to add fuel to the fire.
This heated rivalry doesn't need any of it.
Lost amid all the back and forth is the match-up between two young quarterbacks.
Jets rookie Mark Sanchez and Miami's second-year pro Chad Henne will face off on Monday night at Land Shark Stadium at 8:30 p.m.
"You have two young quarterbacks playing out there that were both picked really high," Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said.
"[They] were both good players in college that both kind of came from different roads, and that both probably are going to be around for a long time if all goes according to plan."
Sanchez, picked fifth in the draft by New York, has had a surprising start. He led his team to an upset in week 2 against the New England Patriots and has four touchdowns with a 57 percent passer rating.
Henne, starting his second NFL game in the place of the injured Chad Pennington, has completed 24 of 41 passes with a touchdown and an interception.
"These two guys are going to be seeing an awful lot of each other for a long time. I think that's kind of interesting, when you look at your division right now, and you see those two players at their positions, to think that they're going to be going at it," Sparano said.
Ryan has been impressed with both.
"[Chad's] a guy that I really liked out of college. When we were ranking all the quarterbacks, they even had me rank them, that was my number one guy," Ryan said.
"I think he was an outstanding quarterback out of college, he's got some mobility, I see he'll run with the ball too."
Henne won't need to rely on his feet too often. Miami is first in the league in rushing yards (183.5) and tied for second in touchdowns (6).
Ronnie Brown is third behind Chris Johnson and Adrian Peterson in yards (396) in the league while fellow tailback Ricky Williams has 248.
The Jets, known for their blitzing defense, could stall the Wildcat&Co. The strategy is not something they're willing to go into detail about.
"We have to go out there and be fundamentally sound, and do what we do against it," New York linebacker Bart Scott said.
"Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, [and] hopefully it will work. I won't give you the secret to shutting it down."
The Jets have a 1-2 punch of their own. Thomas Jones has 229 yards and three touchdowns and Leon Washington has 181. Crowder, a Florida grad, isn't too fond of Washington, Florida State alumni.
"We do not like each other. With Florida State, I hated him. I hate him now. If I see him out, I'm not going to talk to him. I'm not going to slap him, but I'm not going to be pleasant," Crowder said.
"Mark Sanchez is about the only [Jet] I haven't cussed out because he's a rookie."
