Dolphins Hold "Touchdown For Life" Blood Drive
First One Thousand To Donate Blood
Get A Free Ticket To Dolphins vs Tampa Game
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
Doing a good deed Tuesday could get you a free ticket to watch the Dolphins take on Tampa Bay next month. Dol-fans came out in droves to do their part to help the team tackle what could be an issue of life or death.
The Miami Dolphins, in conjunction with Florida Blood Centers and the American Red Cross, are hosting a one-day 12-hour blood drive entitled
Touchdown for Life, presented by Publix.
"Usually, the average blood drive, we probably collect on a good day maybe 20 to 25 units of blood," said Ann Chimoda, the President of Florida Blood Centers. "Today our goal is 2,000."
"This is really an idea that has grown because one of the primary missions of the Miami Dolphins Foundation is to touch as many people as possible and to give, and there's no more important thing that we can give as an organization and that our fans can give along with us than the gift of life," said Mike Dee, Dolphins CEO, in a written statement. "There will be many important drives on the field this year, we hope, but this is going to be our most important drive off the field and a signature event. We describe it as the first annual and we think it's going to be here for many, many years to come."
Injured quarterback Chad Pennington was one of the first to arrive and was blown away by the turnout. "It just shows you the great support that we get from Dol-fans across the South Florida community," he told CBS4's Jim Berry.
"I'm really thankful for all these people who do come and give their time and their blood to help others," said 13-year-old Michael Capo.
The blood drive, being held at Land Shark Stadium, will end at 7 p.m. All those who roll up their sleeves and donate will not only get to meet nearly two dozen players and cheerleaders and get autographs, they'll also get a behind-the-scenes look at Land Shark Stadium including access to the field and tours of the Dolphins locker room.
To sweeten the deal, the first one thousand people to sign up and donate will get a ticket to the November 15th 'Fins vs Buccaneers game, a free Miami Dolphins blood drive t-shirt and two $5 Publix coupons.
