Dolphins' nose tackle Jason Ferguson is out for the season with a quadriceps injury, Miami coach Tony Sparano said on Monday.
Ferguson was injured last Thursday during the Dolphins 24-17 win over the Carolina Panthers. Sparano isn't certain whether Ferguson, 35, will need surgery but he's certain that backups Randy Starks and Tony McDaniel can fill in.
"Very confident in what those players can do. We have been moving players in and out, around the entire season," Sparano said.
"We had a situation where [Jason Ferguson] wasn't in there before; had to play with some of these other guys in his place and they have done a good job. I told the team that this morning. We have had some bumps, but the guys have responded really well. The guys who have gone in at different positions throughout the course of the season have done a great job. It is a credit to the coaches and a credit to the players."
Ferguson's season-ending injury is the latest for the injury-ridden Dolphins. Chad Pennington had surgery after separating his shoulder against San Diego, and Ronnie Brown is out for the remainder of the season with a broken foot.
Sparano said the Dolphins don't have any time to feel sorry for themselves.
"I think it is a tremendous amount of mental toughness at this point. It is easy to feel sorry for yourself in Week 12 when you are playing in the interior and you're bumped up and all those things, but you have to look past those things and you have to get out there and you have to find a way to get better at something during the course of the work week. You have to take extra care of yourself," Sparano said.
