Miami cornerback Will Allen will miss the rest of the season because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament, sources told CBS WFOR news partner the Miami Herald.
After a close loss to the unbeaten Saints, the Dolphins got worse news on Sunday evening about their veteran corner.
Allen was injured with 7:28 left in the third quarter. He ran off the field without assistance, but was in a large knee brace on the sidelines before the game ended.
Allen's injury opens the door for cornerback Vontae Davis to start. That means the Dolphins will start two rookies in the secondary when they travel to play the Jets this Sunday. Sean Smith, a 2009 second round draft pick, has eight tackles in six games, and Davis - Miami's first round pick - has an interception and seven tackles.
